When a pun is put in the appropriate blanks, the pawprint highlights one letter per pun. Taking these letters and ordering by the description order reveals a clue phrase: LASSIE OR SIRIUS. Lassie is a famous canine movie star and Sirius is nicknamed the “Dog Star”, so the answer is DOGSTAR.

Authors' Notes

  • This puzzle is actually a replacement puzzle for one of the puzzles we used during the actual potluck. That puzzle (called Wera Te Island…) involved identifying things that rhymed with DOGS and STARS and a reference to the popular Twitter account weratedogs and the less popular Twitter account weratestars. This puzzle turned out to be much better :)
  • We are especially proud of the puzzle title here, since it is a movie reference, a dog reference, an island reference, and a pun.
  • Our goal was to have at least 100 teams solve this puzzle. It’s awesome to see so many more solve it!
  • Some other fun puns we came up with while writing:
    • BEAGLE EYE
    • CROUCHING TERRIER HIDDEN DRAGON
    • EDDIE THE BEAGLE
    • FANTASTIC MR. BOXER
    • FROM HUSKY TILL DAWN
    • LABRADOR DOGS
    • PLANET TERRIER
    • THE BEAGLE HAS LANDED
    • THE BOONDOCK SAINT BERNARDS
    • THE BOXERTROLLS
    • THE BULLDOG MONTY
